A Little About Me
My Practice
There is no 'right' or 'best' therapy, only what's right and best for each client at the time they come in for treatment. My training as an integrative therapist allows me to dip in and out of different therapeutic interventions depending on what my clients need. Sometimes they 'want' or 'don't want' an approach, which is where my years of experience in different modalities has its benefit. I appreciate being able to psycho-educate clients on what's available and what style of therapy we might want to try, especially if they've had therapy before and didn't find it beneficial.
I pride myself on transparency and honesty and never take for granted the intimate nature of my work. My clients trust me to be a guardian of their most hidden worlds and providing that confidential space, free from judgement is something I greatly value.
I enjoy working with clients ready to be challenged and ready to do the work! And that work might entail laughter as well as tears. I appreciate people willing to push their boundaries and work in creative as well as traditional ways.
Having an internal conflict? Let's get those opposing sides to talk.
Struggling to assert yourself? Here are practical skills that produce results.
Tried so many therapies before but still depressed? Okay, let's uncover what your story is through psychodrama and change the narrative.
These are just a few ways I might work with you...
What I'm Like
One former client provided this feedback at our last session, "Thank you for not being a shitty therapist...I've had a lot of therapists and you're not a shitty one."
I like to think this encapsulates what I'm like as a practitioner. Whilst my interventions and approach is tailored to a client's specific needs, I'm always the same. I enjoy humour and laughing in a session, and it's not uncommon for me to laugh at myself. I believe the answers to most of our dilemmas aren't complicated and find tremendous beauty in simplicity. I like taking a lot of my cues from nature and trust that my clients have all the resources already available to them, I just provide guidance and honest reflection. I'm boundaried with my time and place paramount importance on insuring I get proper holiday time the same as I would encourage my clients to.
I have lots of books on my shelves but haven't read one of them cover to cover since I was forced to in secondary school. I don't believe in a world of 'shoulds' and encourage this practice with my clients. If you're looking for a serious, quiet, dressed in a suit therapist, I'm not for you. That's not to say I can't do or be those things, it just isn't the approach I adopt automatically. I'm not afraid to walk the difficult path with my clients and ensure they feel supported every step of the way on their journey. If I don't think I'm the right fit for you, I'll be sure to communicate this and refer you to someone I trust.
What Can You Expect From My Sessions
Sessions are 50 minutes and after the first session, I typically begin with summarising what was covered in our last session and seeing what you'd like to bring today. If we're working on a specific goal (ie. to manage my anxiety at work), I may give you something to work on between sessions. If not, we go with the flow and see what comes up. If you're struggling with what to talk about, I'll allow some space (yes, THOSE therapeutic silences) but always with a purpose and I'll explain why we're using it if that happens.
I try to allow a few minutes at the end of a session to 'wind down' so that you can continue your day or evening without feeling distressed or upset, although it is natural for this to happen on occasion.
Before ending, we'll agree on our next session date and time.
Our first session
In your first session, I'll take a complete history from you which will include personal information like your DOB, relationship status, etc. as well as what's brought you into therapy.
I'll ask for some background information including your family history, medical history, education, work, current and previous relationships and if there's any history of abuse or neglect. We'll talk about suicidal risk (if you are currently or have ever experienced ideation/intent/acted) and any other relevant details that help me get a fuller picture of you and your life.
I'm aware this sounds like a lot, however, I ensure the first session is kept to the 50 minutes and find that not every detail of your life is necessary. In fact, the first session is usually a great way for us to discover what we want to narrow down on and clarify what you'd like to accomplish in treatment.
