A Little About Me

My Practice
My work is based in both eastern and western psychology. For the past 35 years I have worked clinically with individuals, couples and families around mental wellness issues including; anxiety, depression, trauma, divorce and loss. I am trained in EMDR, CBT, IFS and DBT. My work is electric and generally focuses on supporting the client to decrease suffering, support emotional integration, build stress resilience and explore issues that might otherwise be difficult to approach. I might offer ayurvedic or yoga therapy to bring in daily support with nourishment, embodied or somatic therapy and breathing techniques. I am a educator as well; professor of psycholoy at Sacred Heart University, a yoga therapy educator online at Yoga Interantional, and teach Ayurvedic psychology and wellness coaching online at Yogaversity, My blogs are online at Banyan Botanicals, the Himalayan Institute, and podcasts as "Ayurvedic Abbie".
What I'm Like
The question is "What I am like as a psychotherapist or wellness coach". The answer is, " it depends." Truly each client or couple needs different interventions,. The tools and techniues that will support their healing process are unique to the issues. What I bring to the session is 35 years of interacting with 1000's of people, in different situations with different levels of stress and different needs. My friends and family would say that I am easy going yet when a bouandry is required I am able to be firm. A sense of humor, cultural humility and compassion are probably my better qualities.

What Can You Expect From My Sessions

Sessions are geared toward your teatment goals and the work we need to do to support you to reach those goals. Education, emotional regulation, processing and integration might be a part of your sessions. I might provide an online workbook with structured activities, if applicable. My client(s) lead the way and the structure/ therapeutic technique is something I propose and we agree upon in their treatment plan. The opportunity to explore vulnerability, in a safe enviorment, is always offered and is the basis to promote the healing process, and to work to achieve the goals of our treatment plan.

Our first session

In our first session we will talk about your background, your interest in starting therapy or wellness coaching, and I will gather some general information that will support the creation of your treatment plan. This first session is generally called an Intake Session. I try to be of service in that first session to offer support if there is an immediate need, as we move through the intake. In the next sessions we will work together to develop your treatment goals and a roadmap to find your way to greater ease in your daily life, reduce symptoms and address any longstanding concerns or loss. All quesitons are welcome in sessions as you know yourself better than anyone and your input is important in the work. Confidentaily is primary, as I work on an encrypted site and do not use EHR (electronic health records).
