A Little About Me

My Practice
Hello and thank you for your interest, I am Dr Jonna Kayatz, a Finnish national, trained as a Chartered Counselling Psychologist (DPsych CPsychol) and registered as a Psychological Counsellor and Therapist (BACP) in the UK. I am based in Switzerland. I offer counselling and psychological support for international clientele over Zoom and conduct in-person sessions in Zürich, Switzerland. Although my clients are typically adults, expats and professionals navigating challenges of living abroad, perhaps working in demanding professions, and perhaps juggling with family life and relationships, I offer my services to a diversity of individuals going through difficult and/or, unexpected challenges, and relational problems, as well as individuals seeking to increase their self-awareness and personal growth. My practice philosophy is relational, collaborative and trauma-informed. I offer individually tailored support drawing from various evidence-based therapeutic modalities, such as psychodynamic, person-centred, CBT and ACT therapies, that I am trained due to my Doctoral level training and ongoing, continuing professional development activities. Different psychological interventions and modalities can be more suitable to different challenges. Your own strengths and resources, as well as your self-determination, cultural context and personal life values are of particular significance in my therapeutic approach. Having lived in Finland, New York, London and Switzerland, and previously worked in a corporate environment, studied and raised a family as a parent, I am also drawing from a broad, mature understanding of life and lived experiences that have expanded my worldview. I offer free a 15-20 min. Zoom discussion/online meeting that is an opportunity for you to ask questions and share a bit more about your circumstances, that helps us to consider if my experience would be a good fit. Kindly also note that I offer concessionary rates for students and unemployed individuals.
What I'm Like
I would describe myself as a practitioner someone who is insight-oriented - together we make sense and unpack your challenges in a supportive and a confidential environment. Learning to take different perspectives and to relate to one’s problems in a new way, can be transformative. Overall, my style is active, warm, and empathetic, but also respectful and transparent. Perhaps a client’s feedback that my approach is “a perfect balance of warmth and pragmatism” describes how I work.

What Can You Expect From My Sessions

The sessions are conducted based on the current challenges that you bring and the relational, emotional and behavioral patterns that emerge. We will collaboratively explore what parts in your life are causing you distress, and what is it that you may wish to change, and/or what might be your ‘goals’. Sometimes this looks like more structured, and other times conversational. Sometimes clients face more existential issues or are not sure what is going, or what they may want to get out of the sessions. They may feel stuck or disconnected somehow. The sessions are a space to honour this sense-making process and time to explore the challenges together with you. It is also a space for your difficult and complex feelings.

Our first session

I warmly welcome having an initial, free, and an obligation-free short consultation with me if you are looking for psychological support. After our initial free 15-20 min. consultation, that I will have with every potential client, and us agreeing to go ahead with sessions, we would typically continue having an assessment in a conversational style, me asking more questions about your current circumstances, your past experiences, family and close relationships, in the first session. We would also talk about confidentiality, agree on session frequency, and discuss the terms of my services, that will help us keep our therapeutic alliance and work contained.
