A Little About Me
My Practice
I am a UAE-based, CDA licensed counselling psychologist with 4+ years of experience in working with areas such as complex trauma, stress and burnout, loneliness, self-worth, anxiety, depression, grief, neurodivergence, LGBT2QIA+ concerns, OCD, relational distress, existential angst, and more.
My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, intersectional feminist, existential, self-compassion and strengths-based. My practice is rooted in the humanistic and post-modern schools of psychotherapy and I also draw my techniques from IFS, narrative inquiry, mindfulness and cognitive therapy. I have a deep understanding of trauma and emotional neglect, and their impact on the nervous system, emotions and thought processes.
I take an anti-oppressive, queer affirmative and neuro-expansive stance in my work. My practice takes into account the mental health challenges that come with navigating oppressive power structures and living in a fast-paced, capitalistic, and uncertain world.
I am well versed in working with a diverse population of clients, am multi-culture sensitive, and have a nuanced understanding of South Asian culture. I do individual one-on-one sessions, and work with adult clients above the age of 18.
What I'm Like
Taking a depathologizing approach to mental health, I show up to the therapeutic space with openness, curiosity, presence, and a deep commitment to understanding the inner-world of my clients and the external eco-systems that impact their overall health. I am client-centered and non-directive, and bring a fair amount of reflectivity, questioning the status quo, humor and pop-culture references to my sessions.
What Can You Expect From My Sessions
My therapeutic process entails a mixture of psychoeducation, insight-building, tools for regulating emotions and thoughts, cultivating mindfulness about one’s inner world all while taking an intersectional systemic lens. That said, more than anything else, I focus on holding space for my clients, and building a supportive environment. I also put a significant amount of focus on relational work as through my experience, I’ve learnt that the therapeutic relationship in and of itself acts as a catalyst for repair, change and growth.
Our first session
My first session is exploratory in nature. I start with basic introductions - a little bit about the client, and their life situation, and a little bit about me, my credentials, and approach to therapy.
I inquire about the mental health concerns that the client would want to work on, what their main goals are, and also ask them about their expectations from therapy, and the nature of support that they’re seeking from the space.
I also look into current spaces of strength, and support for clients, and ask basic questions about their mental health history and previous experience with therapy if any.
Sometimes, I might end the session with giving the client some coping tools as and when relevant or by having a collaborative discussion about what our focus areas will be for the next few sessions.
