A Little About Me

My Practice
I use an eclectic and integrated approach borrowing techniques from person centered, psychodynamic, solution focused, narrative, cognitive, and existential psychotherapy. In addition, I explore concepts from Bowen family system related to family systems. The techniques I have been trained in are grounded in research and evidenced based. Ultimately, however technique/theories are subordinate to our relationship which is my utmost priority in developing with you. Moreover, genuineness, empathy, and being non-judgmental are essential to our counseling relationship. It is my aim to provide you a safe space to come forth and explore what is challenging you. I like to focus on issues fundamental to the core human condition such as anxiety, meaning making, purpose, freedom, responsibility, self-actualization, self-worth, guilt and acceptance. Analysis of these conditions/concepts during our sessions brings insight which is the key to change. Insight uncovers blind spots, which once uncovered allows the development of willpower necessary to comprise solutions needed for desired change. I believe people strive for self-actualization, authenticity, and potentialities so the goal of therapy is to empower as to not create dependency. Other aims of the therapeutic process are to remove or negotiate obstacles that impede self-actualization and increase congruence between the real and perceived self. Anxieties stem from consequences of inevitable life conditions. Awareness and self-determination are major goals for change. Accepting core human conditions can bring about the awareness necessary for change. You can take control, create meaning, and confront life’s challenges to make sense and meaning of your world. My job is to help you discover those meanings and stand beside you as you confront the aforementioned challenges. I specialize in working with men who are professionals at the senior and executive level as well as other high/stress, high/impact careers in healthcare, law, tech, and engineering who have made it to the top of the mountain and yet somehow feel like they do not belong or that what they are doing is not “good enough.”
What I'm Like
I predominantly work with men, and I have learned that a more direct, coaching approach has been more successful in my practice. While I strive for authenticity and empathy within the therapeutic alliance, I will challenge my clients with a direct approach. I have found that many of my male clients struggle with introspection at the beginning of the therapeutic relationship and are looking for tools, perspective shifts, and coping strategies to develop self-awareness and explore personal insights.

What Can You Expect From My Sessions

First and foremost, I believe that building trust and creating a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to explore issues and gain insight are fundamental. These factors are essential to the therapeutic process. I am here to guide and join you on your personal quest for authenticity and self-actualization. The aim of therapy is to clarify your needs; as a team, we will create a plan with action-oriented goals that ameliorate your presenting issues. What counseling is not is me providing you the answers or “fixing” you. Therapy is about helping you uncover the means by which to change or progress. I will invest myself totally and my hope is that you do the same. Ultimately, when our time together is finished, I hope you will continue on your path with more self-awareness and clarity.

Our first session

In our first encounter, I will ask questions related to current and past symptoms and history; however, my goal early on is to create a space where you feel validated and seen. I want to hear your story and gain insight into who you are, what you believe, and what you value. I genuinely believe that you have the power to re-author your story if it’s gotten off track. You have the ability to reinvent yourself and engage in your own existential makeover. I will be your guide on your quest to make changes and I walk next to you as you take on whatever challenges you must face. Answer the call; let’s take the next step on your hero’s journey.
