A Little About Me
My Practice
Are you looking for psychological support to help you overcome trauma? Whether you have experienced childhood trauma including child abuse and neglect, bullying, physical or sexual assault, domestic abuse, road traffic accident, racism, emotional neglect, unmet psychological needs from parents, war, or other types of distressing events, we can make sense of your traumatic experiences in therapy.
Many psychological difficulties such as anxiety, depression, addiction, and other complex issues often result from trauma. Whether or not you have a formal diagnosis of PTSD, we can work together to help you overcome the impact of trauma.
I am a fully-accredited Counselling Psychologist based in the UK, with 10 years of clinical experience across diverse settings in the UK, France, India, and the Philippines. My practice is focused on working with children (9 years old +), young people, and adults who have experienced trauma.
Although I am trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches, I mainly use Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) when working on trauma. Depending on your needs and goals, we can blend NET or EMDR with approaches that emphasise self-compassion, attachment styles, and personal values.
I have extensive experience working with individuals from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, especially from South Asia, Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA), Carribean, and West African region. I have also worked therapeutically with LGBTQIA+ clients.
I believe our mental health is interwoven with our heritage, our culture, and the historical and political events that shape us, and that real healing from trauma goes beyond symptom reduction. This is why, with your consent, we can make space in therapy to discuss wider systemic issues that may have shaped your life. Together, we can reflect on the impact of racism, Islamophobia, patriarchy, misogyny, classism, heteronormativity, or colonialism.
I offer face-to-face sessions in Luton and London as well as online via Zoom.
What I'm Like
As a therapist, I am warm, compassionate, and supportive. I strike a careful balance between gently challenging my clients and meeting them where they are at. I also encourage my clients to highlight their strengths and other positive qualities. I believe that therapy should always be collaborative, client-centered, and empowering.
My therapy style is semi-structured. Both Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) provide some some structure to sessions and to the therapy plan. Nevertheless, both of these approaches provide enough flexibility so that we can explore and reflect on topics, which are important to you.
What Can You Expect From My Sessions
Before booking a session with me, I encourage you to get in touch and schedule a free 15-minute, no commitment initial consultation. This is a great opportunity for me to understand if I can help you with your difficulties and therapy goals. At the same time, you will be able to gauge if we are a good fit.
All therapies start with a psychological assessment. We will discuss your current difficulties, early life experience, current living situation, previous experience of therapy, your strengths, and your therapy goals. The assessment is also an opportunity for me to get to know you as a person beyond your symptoms and problems. Do you like watching Korean dramas to unwind? Or do you prefer to go to spoken word poetry events to express yourself? Or are you a believer of attachment parenting as a father?
After the assessment, sessions with me can look different depending on the therapy plan we have agreed on. For example, in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), after the assessment, psycho-education, and a lifeline listing traumatic and positive memories in a chronological manner, a NET session often starts with the re-reading of a narrative account of a traumatic memory, which we have processed in the previous session. Then, we process another traumatic memory in your lifeline, and we reflect on what we have accomplished during the session. We can also discuss other topics that you think is important and relevant to the processed memory. In short, NET sessions can be quite structured, but can equally be flexible and client-.led.
